a Sheikh dies; today not a holiday
Posted in dubai public scene on 06/04/2008 03:57 pm by GraceDespite the rumors spread all over the Emirates yesterday that today and the coming days will be declared a national holiday following the death of Sheikh Nasser bin Zayed Al Nahyan, brother of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE President and ruler of Abu Dhabi.
On November 2, 2004, UAE’s much loved ruler Sheikh Zayed and also known as the man who shaped the country to what it is today died and the whole country was mourning; literally, government offices, private sectors and schools took some days off out of respect for the great man.
But today is not a holiday as people speculated though the flags are raised in half-mast and radio stations will only be playing instrumental music and some prayers for around three days (started yesterday noon).
Sheikh Nasser bin Zayed Al Nahyan died Monday night when the helicopter carrying him and his colleagues crashed in the Gulf waters.
