Carnival of Cities in cool Dubai

by Grace on January 21, 2008

From Mexico last week to Dubai, welcome to this week’s edition of The Carnival of Cities, a collection of stories from all over the world.

As for the city where I live, it has been raining hard last week leaving the city of Dubai underwater for a couple of days (photos here), creating lots of chaos and accidents on the road and schools suspended.

The rain has stopped and we are enjoying the cool weather just in the 50’s (F) and cloudless blue skies. If only it’s like this all year through, I’d stay here forever!

The terribly missed sun came back just in time for the Dubai Marathon last Friday, January 18th. Two time Olympic gold medalist Haile Gebrselassie who battled to beat his own world record to win the bonus of $1 million finished the race in 2 hours 4 minutes and 53 seconds. Had he erased his world mark of 2:04:26, which he set four months ago in Berlin, he would have been richer by another $1 million.

My legs still hurt from the fun run (just running around the marathon venue with my daughter collecting freebies as we go) I did last weekend but the carnival has to go on!

Before starting to travel, Tip Diva presents The Top Ten Tips in Riding Public Transit in an unfamiliar city at Tip Diva. Many people are afraid to ride public transit in an unfamiliar city – because it’s unfamiliar, and people are afraid of getting lost or getting into dangerous situations. While these tips won’t make the city more familiar to you, they’ll help you feel a little more comfortable, and maybe you will be able to explore the city more – or get around the city faster and cheaper – than you would in a rental car.

Marilyn Terrel and Jeannette Kimmel at Intelligent Travel invites you to Running of the Reindeerin the streets of Anchorage, Alaska on February 24. Unlike bulls, reindeers are tame animals and don’t have piercing thorns so no need to worry!

Hungry while travelling? Mary Jo Manzanares of The Seattle Traveller recommends good doughnuts and coffee. Top Pot is a top stop for coffee & doughnuts when you are in Seattle.

Andrew Nelson raves about Bay Area Food Finds at Intelligent Travel, saying when it comes to food, Northern California keeps stirring the pot. Check out great food outlets in this post.

If you are heading to Florida, you are in luck! Sheila Scarborough of Family Travel says you are Guaranteed Florida manatee sightings because November to March are the best time to see them in the wild.

Chris Christensen provides a Self-Guided Tour of San Francisco at Tripinator. For MacWorld attendees, you might want to get out and see the city during your stay there.

Guera talks about fantastic Tacos the real thing posted at A Roaming Aussie Mum. If you are on a diet, better stop looking at the photos too much!

Andrew Edgington gives us some real estate tips Why Has Cyprus Become The Hottest Place to Buy Property?  at The Cyprus Informer. So if you are investing in properties and looking for an exciting opportunity, find out why in this post.

Karen Bryan talks about The fair city of Perth in Scotland at Europe A La Carte Blog. It’s a great place to explore and to take the kids to.

Wendy presents the Dhobi Wallahs in Mumbai at Escape from New York saying, laundry can be anything but mundane in India. In Mumbai, it is theater.

Would you call it art as Cecchini did? Michelle writes about having a ball in Rome at Bleeding Espresso. At least the ‘prank’ this time is less destructive than last year!

Finally, Robin at Around the Island gives us a trip down memory lane as she remembers the streets of Tel Aviv and The Kindness of Strangers during the Gulf War.

*****

That wraps up our arm chair travelling for this week. Please submit your posts and be part of the fun!

There’s a carnival every Monday and the Carnival of Cities is always looking for blogs to host the carnival. Check out the carnival homepage for details or contact Jon Symons.

Grace, this turned out to be a fabulous carnival even if there wasn’t a ton of entries. Great job all around!

Oh, so nice! I want to travel!! I REALLY wanted to get a post in this carnival, but as you noticed, I had to do my own carnival! It took more time than I thought so I didn’t get to do my city post, but I’ll still do it another time – I already went around town and took some great pictures the other day!

What a great bunch of articles to read. I’ve been traveling and absent from the group for awhile, so I’m anxious to dig in and do some reading.

Hi all,

I am thrilled to actually learn some travel tips from Dubai. There is not that much ‘real’ information available, in English, — well, not as much as on Paris, France or Rome, Italy at least. So, Thanks for the photos in the rain.

And also: congrads on the run. Do you know the running blog http://www.speedendurance.com btw? It’s a fabulous site.

Dubai sounds like a happening place, and an up-and-coming popular tourist attraction. I’d love to be able to visit.
