The Carnival of Cities debuts in Dubai

by Grace on September 17, 2007

Welcome to the first edition of the Carnival of Cities here in Dubai!

Thanks to Home Turf Media for letting me host this week. The carnival of cities is a compilation of posts and stories from bloggers around the world on the interesting events taking place in their cities.

Now that the hottest month has passed, we can enjoy the carnival, one city at a time. Did you know that you can tour the world, for free and without ever leaving your comfort zones? Let’s begin the tour!

See the world through the Carnival of Cities!

In the Americas…

From Washington, DC, Jon invites all of us to Ride in a Piece of History – DC Ducks at The DC Traveler. What a great way to get more out of the city tour, by land as well as by water! The kids will surely love it.

Do you have a particular city in world, home away from home but gives you that familiar homey feel? Edith Yeung has found comfort in Visiting New York posted at Dream Think Act.

Mary Jo Manzanares presents You Can Have a Gas at Gas Works Park posted at The Seattle Traveler. Check out how the city of Seattle recycled a former gas plant facility to a unique park with a beautiful view of the city. Pretty creative!

See and admire Chicago’s architecture in a different way – Seafarer talks about her experience in seeing Chicago’s architecture, seen from a river cruise in Family Travel.

Carole presents the talented San Diego Surf Dogsin the recent Lowes Surf Dog Competition posted at The San Diego Beat. See the pooches in action!

If you are a traveller and environment conscious, Marilyn Terrel suggests you check out a one of a kind Boston Hotel Goes Green posted at Intelligent Travel.

Beverly Robertson shares a spine tingling story of A Haunting Hotel in Arizona posted at Murmuring Trees. Read and dare to experience the thrill! This is not fiction!

From spooky to happy…There’s a buzz going on in the Islands: Who will be crowned Oahu’s Healthiest Baby of 2007? Let’s keep our fingers crossed and wish Kailani’s baby good luck who is entering the Meadow Gold Healthy Baby Contest posted at An Island Life.

On to the neighboring Canada…

When you go to Vancouver,  Isabella J. Mori highly recommends The Westin Bayshore – Heavenly! See how fabulous this place is and Isabella’s take on how she likes it there in Coal Harbour: Urban Living on the Waterfront.

Darlene Berkel gives us much more option of finding a home away from home in Vancouver. Check out the popular choices of The Best Bed and Breakfasts In Vancouver posted at Everyone Loves To Travel. While staying in a big hotel is a great experience, a family run bed and breakfast is also worth checking out.

Crossing the Atlantic, in Europe…

Sognatrice takes us Into the heart of Calabria: benvenuti a badolato! in Bleeding Espresso. Fill your cup with your favorite drink and let’s all explore together the sights and history of scenic Italy.

There are many ways to explore a place and in Madrid, you can also ’segway’ around the city. Liz Lewis presents the basics of segway travel in Madrid on Two Wheels, The Segway Tour posted at My Year of Getting Published. What an exciting and fun way to explore the beautiful city of Madrid. A must try for everyone!

Hairy Swede shares his Triumphant Return to Student Life in Uppsala posted at A Swedish American In Sweden. It would be a truly enjoyable experience to go back to see the familiar places and faces once again.

Then off we hop to New Zealand!

Doris Chua guides us through a scenic trip to Auckland, New Zealand – The City of Sails posted at Doris on Travels. Auckland is the main gateway to New Zealand and offers something for everyone. Explore the beautiful city with the photos.

See what’s going on in Asia…

Robin shares a unique festival of bicycles in Israel in Bicycling for Atonement posted at Around The Island. After the Jewish New Year comes Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, a very solemn day. Can you imagine commerce in complete halt, businesses closed, no radio and television and even the airport is shut down completely? I would love to have this kind of peace and quite even for just a day in one year here in chaotic Dubai!

What better way to see the Tian Tan or the Temple of Heaven in Beijing, China without leaving your home just by looking at Deb’s Temple of Heaven post at Ten-Forty!

Conan Stevens presents his exciting Holiday in Phnom Penh posted at Action Hero in Asia. One of the advantages of living in Thailand is that you get to get out and spend a holiday at the neighboring countries to change your visa status. You can extend your vacation in Thailand and at the same time, see other interesting places as well.

Lastly from far, far Africa…

Alfa King writes about Ramadan and fasting in Mauritius as well as the rest of the Muslim world in Muslims in purge posted at Alfa King Memories.

The whole Muslim community in Dubai is also fasting for Ramadan. Thank God my city is diverse enough to exempt non-Muslims from not taking any food or drink until the sun sets – or else, I might not be able to come up with this post as I don’t function well on an empty stomach!

That wraps up our armchair travelling for this week. I hope you enjoyed the carnival as I did. Thank you to all who submitted their posts and gave other readers a chance to look through the cities through the carnival. Next week the carnival will be at Intelligent Travel. Don’t forget to submit your article on time!

The Carnival of Cities is always looking for people to host it in their site. If you want to give it a go, please visit the carnival page for guidelines here.
