Traffic is tiresome, frustrating

by Grace on February 9, 2009

Life is a little bit crazy here in the Emirates for two consecutive days now. The dreadful choke o’ block traffic is back. It was ok for the past few weeks but since yesterday, I had been spending more than an hour driving and surviving through heavy traffic. Normally, it just takes 15 minutes to drive from my home to my office but yesterday and today took me at least 60 minutes. I could have done a complete yoga session inside my static car.

No one can really pinpoint the real cause of the severe traffic jam – could be random accidents here and there (accidents could be the cause but then it could be an EFFECT too), construction of the Dubai Metro that has resulted in closed lanes and confusing diversions, increase in cars, increase in people living and commuting from the neighboring Emirate of Sharjah, etc.

* Dubai expats run to Sharjah for a cheaper option in apartment rents. Sadly, Sharjah’s public transport system is almost non-existent so the Emirate is flooded with cars. Most of these cars travel to Dubai everyday, adding congestion. *

I arrived at 8:45, 15 minutes late. My boss who travels from Sharjah came to office at 10:30 yesterday and 9:00 today. So my being late is a little bit okay (I suppose?). Still doesn’t fix the annoying feeling I have with regards to traffic.  *sigh*

Traffic jams happen frequently here I am amazed traffic story still lands a space in the news.  Read the comments below the news article, too.

Wow 60 minutes when it should only take 15, that must be incredibly frustrating.

Ugh, I detest traffic! Here on the volcano, we don`t get much, but for some stupid reason, the buses go very, very slowly. What takes my husband 10 minutes on the bike (he goes fast, so it should be like 15) takes an HOUR by chicken bus. Not all of them drive at breakneck speeds. :)

I live in Southern California and i spend 1 hour each day wasting my life away in traffic. It is rediculous. How much of my life will be wasted when all is said and done….? Probably at least a few years. Ah I wish cars were never invented….or actually maybe someone will invent a teleportation machine!

Oh I wish flying cars like those in the movie Fifth Element is available! Right now!
