A little bit of rain and the whole city is damned. Contrary to popular belief, it does rain here in Dubai and when it does, even the most expensive house have been known to leak dramatically.
We woke up today with the sound of the rain. Today morning, the whole of UAE seemed to be completely immobilized due to a slight drizzling in the wee hours of the day. Don’t fret. I am not lying. Yes, we also have rains here in the desert. After all, it’s ”winter” here, where rain is at its most frequent. So, did the people love it?
Truth is, Dubai can’t cope with rain. It is a city built only for desert life, houses with flat roofs, streets with limited drainage and few umbrellas for sale. A small amount of rain turns highways into a slimy, skidding death traps. A downpour floods every imaginable road, pavements and car parks creating “little (murky) lakes”.
Meanwhile, I will be leaving you with a postcard perfect picture of Dubai…when the skies don’t open up and splash some rain, when all it offers are endless blue skies.
