Did you leave your car at home?

by Grace on September 22, 2008

Today, September 22, Monday is World Car-Free Day. Ever heard of that?

Not on this side of the world. I’ve never heard of such day and it’s not like anything different is going to happen even if people were aware that today is World Car-Free Day. This is Dubai, the city with inefficient, insufficient public transport that could not survive a day without the use of private vehicles.

Today is another typical day here in the Emirates:

Photo from Gulf News.

World Car-Free day is celebrated on September 22 every year (who knew? You knew?), aims to show people what cities would look, feel and sound like without cars. But today, the roads in Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi remain gridlocked because the authorities and residents have shown no desire to participate in the event. The serious lack of public transport is one, another reason is, it is too hot to walk or even stand outside.

(We are still having 38C temps here, who would want to walk to work with that).

Did you know about this day? and did you/your city participate in the event?

I have no idea! They should do more promotion. We could have used that day yesterday. There is a gas shortage in the Atlanta area. I think no driving day will be a nice change.

Nope. I have heard about it before but forgot again. We have horrible public transport here. If I were to go without my car, I would have to walk to work and walk the kids to school….might not have been such a bad idea today though. I wouldn’t have scratched my car then!

Same here in Miami – for several months of the year you’re drenched in sweat if you walk two blocks (or wait for the bus 10 minutes) so how many people are going to really do that??

If in Emirates or in that region the traffic is full , I don’t know what to say about the one in New York , or Los Angeles for example . I don’t know if in our days is usefull a car , the public transport is more efficient . Thank you !

I really don’t know what I do in same cases. I think a car is very useful and personally i don’t prefer the public transport..

public transport is good only in some special situation, but for me the best kind of transportation is a car.

If you look at this issue from an economic point of view – it is possible to calculate the elementary how much money we spend on the car and how much on public transport and draw conclusions.

I wonder what life really looks like without cars moving around! But it seems it will never gonna happen that idea. Thanks for letting my mind to wander once in a while. Nice blog!

This is also good for the environment. Less cars on the road means less emissions that contribute to air pollution.

The funny thing at this day in ‘09 I couldnt use my car. I don’t think we can expect to go without our cars without a decent solution to replace it. Or maybe we will have environmental cars within 20 years.

I have no idea, I will keep that in mind next year.

Most governments are trying to invoke green programs and such, why not pull out all the stops and make sure that public transport is running perfectly with alternatives at the ready for “no car day”. If the government really upheld this policy, advertised way in advance and perhaps even threaten with fines…..I think you would see a dramatic decrease in traffic…..well maybe only in major cities.

world car free day? Never heard of it and don’t really think that there are many cities out there that really participate… there are too many people who depend on their car because either the weather doesn’t allow them to walk or the sheer distance is too much for one human to handle.
