10 months after – DRIVING EDITION

by Grace on November 13, 2007

After 10 months, you know when you’re in Dubai when:

  • Your kid asks why you’re all wet at the back after you drive
  •  A journey that normally takes 15 minutes on Friday mornings takes you 2 hours on normal days.
  • You drive to Naif and you think you took the wrong exit and you landed in India!
  • You take the wrong turn and you have to drive forever to go back!
  • After years of driving and never touching the horn, you find yourself honking every single minute.
  • You repeatedly ask your husband driving if he is on the right side of the road!!
  • You get scratches in your car appearing on a daily basis and you have no idea where you got it!!
  • The speed restriction is just a suggestion!
  • Sometimes the drivers on the road don’t have any idea what an indicator is!
  • All you talk about is traffic.
  • You feel already sick of repeating your theories about what is causing traffic and how it can be solved…but nevertheless can’t bring yourself to swallow it and shut up.
  • Traffic stories are the main agenda at bedtime talks

There is no way my husband could live there. He’s so careful about our cars. He’d go crazy if there was even the tiniest scratch.

You know you’re a driver in Dubai

* you see a car reversing on Sheikh Zayed Road during rush hour cos the driver missed the turning
* to get to the Starbucks on the other side of the road (OK it’s a 12 lane road) you have to go 2km UUUUUPPPPPPP then take a massive u-turn and then go back AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLL the way down. you’ll need more than just a coffee after that
* you can sit in your car and honk your horn outside a restaurant and they will come and take your order
* over night they replace the roundabout with a set of signals, change the direction of the road and narrow it to one lane… for a day and then change it again
* indicators are strictly optional as are head lights in the evening
*when it’s foggy, people drive faster and turn on their hazards
*a hole appears in the road big enough to swallow a car and then overnight they fill it with rocks…and a little spread of tar

Driving in Dubai is so unique! (at least to me it is!)
