mercury rising

Can you really tell between 35C and 40C?

Truth is, 4 months living in the middle east had me defining the temperature in the beginning of these summer months as hot/tolerable and hot/no choice. If the temperature shoots above 30C, I couldn’t care less, all I feel is that it is burning hot but as long as I have my sunglasses and umbrella, I can assure myself I can come home alive, lol.

I heard that “officially” Dubai summer temperatures never goes over 49C. But it seems that it is not the temperature that matters, it is the humidity percentage. A 100% humidity can be hard to take, hard to breathe and difficult for bespectacled people especially when coming out from a freezing mall to the humid outside world. One would wish to have mini-car window wipers installed in their eyeglasses.

I can tell between freezing zero and +5C. +5C is relatively “warm” in my vocabulary especially during the peak of Japanese winter in February. When the mercury passes over the 0C line, I feel blessed. Today, I feel kinda blessed.

It was tolerable and cool(!?) this morning at 32C.  Have I gone mad? 32C and I feel actually great even when sweating all the way to work. But everyday last week at 8 in the morning has no less than 35C so I am grateful today.

So, it is very hot at the moment but the discomfort  index is not that high — YET. The bedouins of the desert had been living and surviving for so many thousand years now. I am born in the technology age, with airconditioned houses and buses and cars. I should be ok.

Hi there–I remember a moment one summer in August, walking out onto the street from an air conditioned foyer and being HIT by the hot, sticky, humid air. My sunglasses immediately puddled and my body burst into flames (or so it seemed).

Humidity adds so much more discomfort to an otherwise uncomfortable hot day.

My thoughts are with you (smile)!
