school vacation starts

by Grace on July 6, 2007

School term has ended to make way for the hot summer months here. To be exact, 66 days more until the bus stops in front of our building to take the little one to school again.

Since we have no out-of-Dubai vacation in our schedules this year, it’s that time of the year to plan out what to do to keep her from being bored.

  • Going to the Park – nah, too hot!!
  • Going to the Malls – Noo, too cold!!
  • Staying inside the house – Yikes, too boring!!

So, what’s left to do?

We need to get one of each three above, like going to the park after the sun sets. It’s still bright at 7 pm anyway. I despise going outside even if it’s night, though. Sometimes it’s hard to breathe with the humidity!!

Go to the malls on weekends but bring a light jacket for P and headache tablets for me. Believe me, these people here don’t have a single idea what is happening to the environment with the freezing a/c setting they implement. Sometimes I wonder if Ski Dubai at the Mall of the Emirates has left its doors open as the temperature inside the whole mall is almost the same as the -1 setting inside the man-made ski resort!

Stay inside the house and do lots of playing and reading books, building Lego blocks, watch cooking in the kitchen, one kid-friendly DVD per day and some music videos. Play I-Spy in the computer for 30 minutes, get longer bath times.

Momsters out there, how do you keep the little tot busy on school holidays?

I lost my last comment. haaa
ok, here is some thoughts
1. finger painting, all kinds of painting
2. using a cheap can of shaving cream on a glass table, kids love to play and “paint” with that on the table
3. hide and seek?
4. baking? kids love to bake, I hate it!
5. do you have kids scissors? what about making cut outs with the folded paper, I forget what it is called, but you know what I mean right?
6. do you have a craft store? we have a place called Michael’s here and they always have cool “cheap” crafts for kids of all ages…Michaels.com might even have ideas…
7. do you have a digital camera and do you think P could take some shots around the house? you could play a game of taking photos. Ok that’s just me. I love taking photos.
Ok I am going to have to think some more. I have a brain freeze….I used to teach both elementary and preschool. YOU WOULD think I could come up with more ideas…
I JUST HATE being stuck indoors.
OH do a PUPPET show… use dolls or make them out of paper, and have P make up a story. KIDS are great with stories…
I will think more

Is it really that cold at the shopping mall? Why do they make it so uncomfortable? Sounds like you’ll have to find a lot of at-home activities to do. Good luck!
