Immense love of country can be seen everywhere as the 37th National Day nears here in the Emirates. Although only 20% of Dubai’s population are locals (Emiratis) they make sure their presence and voice are noticed on this special day. Buildings are lit up, so many cars are temporarily painted with the 4 colors of the UAE flag.
The world’s largest and record breaking fireworks display will light up the Abu Dhabi sky on December 2. Sadly, it’s too far for us so we can’t go. I wish we could but one can only imagine the turmoil that could happen if all of Dubai’s cars flock and choke-o-block Abu Dhabi’s small roads.
I do not fancy peeing in the car.
In Dubai, the Roads & Transport Authority decorated roads, bridges and tunnels with a glamorous array of lights and UAE flags as part of Dubai Government National Day celebrations.
We get one day off tomorrow and I’ll probably spend it outside taking photos of interesting things I’ll see.
In another note, it is announced that the government sector (only locals are working in the government sector by the way) will have 10 days of holiday starting tomorrow and will continue next week for the Islamic Holiday Eid al-Adha. For the private sector expat employees? Only one day tomorrow definite and a couple of days next week, which is still unannounced (we could not even plan ahead!) – it’s still up to the sighting of the moon!
No wonder no one can convince a local to work in the private sector despite the government’s Emiratisation program (a movement intended to put locals in the private sector)!
It’s been a constant discussion among the expat community here why we don’t get equal holidays with the government employees. For the National Day and Eid festivities this month alone, we get a maximum of 3-4 days while they get TEN. Aren’t we arm in arm in the development of this nation? Aren’t we expats an important part of the society who are tired with the long work hours and deserve those delicious ten days as well?
Can you hear the rising tone of my voice? This was not even meant to be a rant! But alas, one note higher and I’ll get the classic remark, “If you don’t like it here, then leave.”
