Getting Help: every expat mom should know

by Grace on December 4, 2007

Relocating to a foreign country presents many challenges. Adapting to the weather, the new culture, language and overall new way of life. One of the first things I did when we moved in Dubai is record the emergency numbers because we have a young child and we all know that kids can have very unpredictable health at times.

Every mom living abroad should know emergency contacts just in case for:

  1. Police, fire and ambulance services
  2. Closest hospital number and address
  3. Poison control center
  4. Pharmacy
  5. Doctor or Medical Clinic

What I failed to do was post the phone numbers visible enough for anyone to use it, just in case. It was just plastered inside my head so when an emergency situation came last weekend, I panicked. Terribly.

I kept on screaming to my husband to dial 119. It is the emergency number of Japan, where we lived prior to our relocation in Dubai. In Dubai, 999 is the number to dial for police, fire or ambulance services. That number is now visibly pasted in our fridge door but I certainly hope I won’t be making such calls again.

I’m sure every mother would be in a panic as you were. Who expects that their child is going to slip unconscious? Don’t be too hard on yourself, Grace. Now that you have the proper numbers in place, you can rest a bit easier.
