We had an emergency situation yesterday in the early hours of the morning. We rushed our girl to the hospital due to a sudden, out of the blue, where did that come from sort of asthma attack that troubles me to no end.
The doctor told me many Dubai residents, as soon as they landed here, are suffering from asthma and other lung problems due to the pollution brought about by construction (the city is basically under construction) and allergens such as molds and mildew that thrive in unseen places because of the abnormally high humidity (up to more than 90% on some days in the peak of summer!) in this country during summer.
The doctor’s diagnosis: the whole place is making my daughter sick. (Last year she was ok, though)
Bluntly I asked, “Should we leave?”
…and without batting an eyelash, the good doctor replied curtly, “That’s actually not a bad advice I can give you (in case the asthma worsens).”

OH NO! Poor girl. My husband suffers from ASthma…..
THe life changing drug for him was advair. WE can actually live without fear now that he is on that. But we don’t live in Pollution. His asthma was mostly triggered by exercise and allergies…
Is leaving an option? IN the meantime, I would really look into advair for her http://www.advair.com/. I do not represent the company now make money, but I know a few people that are on it (many kids) and I know a few people that worked on the launch of it. IT IS VERY EFFECTIVE> It might be good to put her on it until you decide what to do…
Thanks for the suggestion! I’ll look into that and talk to the doctor. I believe that her asthma is triggered by the dusty and humid environment. I will observe her when we go to Japan on vacation for a month.

Grace, that is totally scary. I hope you all can figure out what is best to do in this situation.
(Thanks for commenting on my blog. I live where it can be quite humid, too, but not THAT humid!)

Hopefully you don’t have to leave and that there will be something the doctors can do for your precious daughter!!!
I hope so, I pray so..I haven’t recovered from all the transferring from one country to another…I’m not ready to transfer again!

Oh no! Poor Pristine! I know you hate to leave, but you’ll also do what is best for your daughter. Let’s hope things get better from here on out.
Yeah we would have loved to stay. We’ll observe for now. If it worsens then we might really leave…imagine having a member of the family (a child for that matter) who’s allergic to the place!

That’s so common here in the Middle East because of the dusty environment but it’s even worse when it’s THAT humid and polluted. Hugs to Pristine… hope she’s better already!
We had been enjoying our life here and now this…if her asthma worsens/never stops even when it’s winter here, then we might have to find somewhere else to live…

Oh Grace….color me a total reactionary…BUT, I would be out of the desert SO fast. I can certainly understand your concern and frustrtion. Our kids are such an important element in our lives. If mine were threatened by such things, I know I would leave and never look back. After all, jobs can be repaced, but children cannot!
Hugs to all of you. I will pray that decisions will be made wisely and efficiently! AND that if you leave, you will still find a terrific job awaiting you at home!

i hope pristine is better now.
it’s a good thing that you’d be taking a leave from dubai for a while during your visit to japan and philippines. maybe you could observe during that period if she’ll be better outside the desert environment.

I’m so sorry for what your family is going through. I know you’ll do what’s best for Pristine. You’re such a great mother. {{hugs}}
Thanks, Kailani. I hope to make the best decision for her sake.

Grace, I’m sorry to hear about this. I hope she is better now.. at least for the meantime. Buti na lang din, timely ang vacation nyo.
I hope this is just temporary.
Maybe she’s stressed lately? Sometimes, asthma attacks only occur when one’s immune system is down because of sickness, stress, etc.
My allergic rhinitis (small compared to asthma really) is like that. I don’t get it when I’m well rested.
