Banned from lifting, running, for now

by Grace on November 28, 2009

It’s been a while since I wrote a fitness post mentioning my “fitness routine”. I’m still doing it, holding on to the rope, so to speak and not letting myself fall.

I’ve exercised regularly and still watched my diet. Except for a couple of cheat days that involved a Burger King with mushrooms and swiss cheese, I kept my diet clean. And I just paid for four months of gym membership last week. In short, there’s really nothing to report except that I got that horrible toothache that kept me from doing exercise, had a root canal which relieved the pain but came back because I was lifting weights and running a lot. What?

I went to the dentist again on my birthday last Sunday and she told me my recovery is somehow slow – could you be exerting some force or lifting heavy weights. Wowza. Bull’s eye. She advised me to lie low for a bit, say, quit doing intense exercise for a week and see her again.

My routine feels strange without having to run to the gym during lunch break. I have a full hour vacant so I spend it either walking outside – Dubai’s weather is gorgeous at this time of the year. I still hope I can go back to the gym again but for now, I must let this tooth/gums/nerves heal.

Actually, my mom warned me after the root canal surgery to take it slow but I thought she was old school and didn’t listen. Slap in the face.

Mom’s still knows best.

I think it’s good to take it slow sometimes. You are looking amazing and have done so well in your fitness routine, I think of you for inspiration sometimes! I have been doing kickboxing/boot camp for the past 2 mths now and it is starting to pay off I think!

First of all, Happy Belated Birthday! Hope you had a great celebration!

I also didn’t know about not lifting heavy things when you’ve had any type of non-related surgery. My Dad just had eye surgery and he’s not allowed to carry anything heavy. Strange.

Hey Grace, hang in there. You are doing the smart thing in letting yourself heal first. You don’t want to be held back even more in case you aggravate the situation. Do some damage control for now. I know you can do this!

Huh, who would have thought you couldn’t exercise after having dental work… and here my dad had a knee replaced and they told him he could do whatever he wanted as long as it didn’t hurt. He’s doing really well now too. Only a month out and walking with us yesterday to get a Christmas tree.
So sorry about that crazy taxi ride to the dentist…

Don’t you just hate it when mom is right, even when you are an adult? :-)
Just remember, you will be the one who is always right once Pristine grows up…. there is that to look forward to!!
Take it easy, and recover. When you lift, your blood and oxygen flows to the muscles that are doing the work and away from the part that is trying to heal, and that slows down the healing process. You need those extra blood vessels, especially white blood cells, and oxygen to aid in healing, so that is why you have to stop the exercising to speed up healing time. It is simply a physiologic response.
Hope it is much better soon, and I hope you are taking something for the pain, too.
Plus think of this as a respite from all the terrible heat you had and a chance to enjoy your gorgeous weather that you have… and you can take some more of you wonderful photographs to share with us.
