Week 11: Making changes in my diet

by Grace on June 25, 2009

I have made changes in my diet/nutrition since starting the Turbulence Training program for the plain and simple reason that NOTHING CAN OUT-TRAIN A BAD DIET. It’s a waste of time, money and effort (oh those muscle pains!) if I exercise like mad and eat 5,000 calories and feast on sugar afterwards because no matter how I’ll spent time in the gym and run or do strength training, I won’t achieve my goal if I continue to eat what I had been eating.

I can’t believe I used to snack on peanut butter sandwiches on white bread – not that there’s something wrong with it. I have nothing against peanut butter or white bread or the people who ate them. It’s just, it won’t help me get rid of my belly fat so I had to think of healthier snack options and here are my top 5 preferences:

1. Fresh vegetables – I am not picky with any vergetable and I can eat any so this isn’t exactly a diet change on my part. I am just introducing vegetables to be eaten as part of my snacks like baby carrots, slices of cucumber or even tomatoes!

2. Fresh fruits – My favorites are apples, pears, avocado, grapefruit and grapes. I LOVE grapes, raw and frozen. Have you tried freezing grapes? It works wonders with your ice cream cravings! The next time you reach for the pint of vanilla ice cream in your fridge, you can instead nibble on the sweet frozen grapes. But really, you shouldn’t stock up on that vanilla ice cream in the first place!

3. Raw nuts – How handy can this snack be? They require no preparation or cooking. I can eat nuts when hunger pangs strike in the mid-afternoon when I am still at work. My favorites are almonds, walnuts and peanuts. The only setback? While nuts are high in nutritional value, their calorie content is also high so I only eat a handful not a bowlful!

Needless to say, I always have some nuts in my bag when I go out – it helps me with my temporary hunger pangs and saved me from unnecessary trips to McDonalds!

4. Dried fuits – Figs, apricots and raisins make up my list of favorite dried fruits to munch on. They are naturally sweet and don’t require washing, peeling or cutting – perfect for travelling.

5. Dark chocolate – Though I am aiming to reduce my body fat percentage (I say this instead of saying “losing weight”), I can’t stop eating chocolate at times but I’ve substituted the normal milk chocolate to dark ones. The higher the cacao content, the bitter..sorry, better. Studies say dark chocolate is packed with anti-oxidants and promotes health.

Nothing out of a box and only one ingredient as much as possible. I won’t touch something with several ingredients at the back I couldn’t read or pronounce properly.

What are your favorite healthy (or not so healthy) snacks?

That said, next week is the final week of the Turbulence Training Transformation Contest. At this point, I might not be proclaimed winner but in my opinion, all brave participants of the transformation contest are all winners in a sense that they have made healthier choices in their nutrition, committed to lose fat and kept an active lifestyle! For me, the transformation contest has been a very big motivator and I’m so glad I was able to stick with the program for 11 weeks and still looking forward to doing it each and every time.

I’ll write more on the final week and probably (shamelessly) post photos again.
