I had too much reading of bad news today and I terribly regret it. Never again would I start my morning with unpleasant news, especially concerning kids.
First, a couple of children run over by vehicles, either by their own school buses or other children’s parents INSIDE school premises. The picture of the 7-year old girl was on Gulf News and her story is heartbreaking as any mother could take! To those who did not click the link I posted, the girl was ran over by a car, inside the car park by another mother picking-up her kids from the same school.
Schools are supposed to be responsible for children during school hours and I hate to say this but some schools here in Dubai are neglecting their responsibilities. Some of them blame there are too many children and the bus driver and one assistant inside a bus with more than 30 children is not enough. The school assistant let her get off the bus alone, ran to the building to get her forgotten lunchbox and get killed by a panicky driver.
Pristine is going to school in a school bus too but a fairly small one, a school van you may call it. There are only a maximum of 10 children inside the vehicle with the lady driver and one lady assistant inside. So far, I am contented with their service and feel safe — the lady driver is very professional and very careful. Parent’s vehicles are not allowed inside her school premises.
But still, with this kind of news lately, I don’t know what to say. Every single day I pray my daughter comes home safe.
Next, I read about the abduction of a 4-year old girl while on holiday in Portugal with her parents. The parents went out for a while and found out later that someone has taken their daughter. I could not imagine the nightmare they are going through.
I know I can’t keep my daughter under my wings forever, to imprison her in our own house with 24/7 surveillance would be impossible.
There are countless possibilities of bad things than happen to our children in the world outside. I think this is a tough call for any parent and if I start to worry about that every single possibility, I know I will definitely lose my sanity.
Is the goal to make a world where all children are safe and happy, that impossible to achieve?

This month’s issue of the reader’s digest featured a story on children (toddlers to be exact) who were killed by their own parents or relatives during back-over of their SUVs. The statistics were staggering! Imagine, 100 children killed in the U.S. annually because of this type of accident. Not so long ago I heard from a family doctor friend, that their two doctor friends ran over their 2 year old child when reversing their car! Imagina ra gud unsa na ka sakit sa mga bata di ba? mamatay sila in the most painful way!….
