plates more expensive than cars

They did it again. License plate No 1 broke the world record as the most expensive car number plate, with a price tag of Dh52.2 million (US$14.5 million) in an intense bidding in Abu Dhabi last week.The buyer broke the record by paying more than twice the previous record which went to plate No 5 and is owned by his cousin, also a prominent businessman. The money generated will be used to establish a specialised hospital in Abu Dhabi. The proceeds of the auction are said to go to charity so I guess the buyer is hitting two birds with one stone. A contribution to charity and a special plate to boot.
A number plate for a more than a million dollars. Wow, I wonder if it’s really worth it?
Note: The Maserati MC12 Corsa is the most expensive car in the world costing Dh9.78 million(US$2.8 million) .
I guess that’s a very good “tactic” to lure those insanely rich guys to charity.

Sounds like the plate is just a showier version of the “donated by” plaque at the hospital. Still, all for a good cause.

That is crazy. I have a license plate upstairs I am willing to sell if there are any buyers out there. Should I start the bidding at 10k?

I saw that in the news here and meant to ask you about it. I just shake my head that one person would have that much money…to spend on one license plate. Is there something very wrong about that, or is it just me???

Wow…I cannot even imagine what “small change” would be in Dubai!!! Funny how we think of different countries as being “wealthy”, but I think their wealth would pale when compared to this place!!!!

That is funny! In Switzerland people also want those low number plates. Though I DO NOT THINK you can buy them there, you have to wait til someone dies!
Here in the states… though you can customize your plate, Like mine says IMSUISS (I Am Suisse-a gift from my brother)…..but if you have the state number plates they have a preset number and it can never be just 1
