deleting comments

by Grace on April 7, 2007

I blog-hop every now and then, and lurking not, I post comments…maybe lots of it. So much for free speech area, I just don’t know why some people delete comments. Clash of opinions? not really, I am so not into politicking so I often leave safe and neutral comments. But some still choose what to post and what not to. I check back on some comments I make, and find out that while there are actual people who are open enough to display comments from all over the blogosphere, there still exists people who only chose the flowery words — any kind of honest to goodness opinions given stimulated from their vicious little rants just don’t  pop out, ever. They just accept lines that are acceptable in their own standard. But then again, it’s free will so to speak!

I just feel troubled if they post an entry and says at the last line: “Commenting disabled.” Makes me wonder what’s the purpose of writing online when they only want to make a one-way love affair with the reading public. Generally, what’s the point of comments if you don’t like people to comment? The level of hypocrisy here is extreme it’s actually hilarious.

Then there’s this other one person who deletes all the comments that I make in her blog. Comment moderation, her choice but what troubles me most is that she is lurking in my site and not commented even once. I’m hearing more and more people who delete comments that don’t agree with their position. I think that kind of comment grazing s*cks. If you can’t put up people who don’t agree with you, then turn off the comments altogether.

On the other hand, with the recent deluge of comment spammers, comment spam is a fact of life if you have a blog. But with most blog providers, blacklisting words such as ass will automatically delete comments containing that word. My name does not contain the a-s-s nor I do write it in any of my comments. And if I may recall, I never write “provocative” things — what for anyway?

Do’t get me wrong, comment deleting is well within each blogger’s rights. Everyone is reserved the right to remove comments that are spammy, off-topic or otherwise unsuitable based on their comment policy. It’s their property. Deleting SPAM and over the top offensive or racist ones is cool with me but personally, just deleting them because you don’t agree with them seems naughty to me.

How often do you delete comments on your blog?

I think in 5 years of blogging, I have deleted a total of two non-spam comments. And that’s because they were just downright mean, nasy and attacking. Differing opinions I can handle. Nastiness I cannot. After all, it’s my “house” in a way, so I don’t have to listen to people being rude and obnoxious to me is the way I see it.

Sometimes I write a post that is just something I wanted to say and I don’t really want to discuss it – I just want to say it and get it off my chest – and I don’t turn comments on, but that’s the exception and not the rule. And sometimes I’ll turn comments off on old posts if they get a lot of spam comments, just because I get tired of deleting them. Other than that, I’m pretty open.

I have never deleted comments, except for spam. I sometimes don’t agree with comments left and then I’ll take it on with the specific person via e-mail OR if I feel the need to explain myself better after reading a comment, I will add to my post.

I do understand that sometimes people don’t want comment on a post. On a post that they want to explain themself and almost know that people will read it wrongly? I don’t know. I haven’t done that yet…but I can see why some people will

Hi—new reader to your blog.
Interesting post.
I haven’t had any call to delete comments, even those that disagree. It would seem that a differing of thoughts would be a postive, something that leads to greater dialogue and, possibly, greater clarity for all who are reading.

I can see deleting spammers.

Thanks for the post.

you sound pissed! :-) your comments on my blog are always welcome. I must admit I am an advocate for positive things. And that doesn’t mean I do not have any opinion. I guess it is up to the homeowner what she/he wants to keep inside her/his house and what she will trash.

I never deleted comments. Only that last time when I imported new commenting system into my blog, that made the previous comments can’t be viewed on the blog page anymore. This is because the comment part is using another new database system. However I still can view all the previous comments every time I signed in into my blog account. Including one comment I received which was very negatively commenting towards ME. I replied her comment to support my own opinions, and the reply-comment was even much longer than the entry I wrote ;P. As for me, I think other people do has different opinion and I like to know what they think too even though I don’t necessarily have to accept his/her opinion. Except for spam, surely I will delete it if I get it someday.

I love reading your blog. Only that I’m not good at giving comment =D. Thanks for the comment you left on my blog during last time (and that was before I changed into the new comment system) =D.

Lastly, SAKURA is blooming here!

Thanks for your comment on my blog…I love comments! It reassures me that at least someone reads what I’m writing. Although I often ask myself if that’s the reason I blog or if I blog for my own pleasure? I guess it’s a bit of both. I just wish my friends would comment. Since we’ve moved I feel like they’ve fallen off the face of the earth! I like following your blog, as we have both been in our new countries the same amount of time. Dubai sounds crazy busy! NZ is pretty laid back!

Only the spams. Other than that I don’t , I enjoy reading other peoples reaction to my blog :D . Although, the comments that you posted recently to my blog were not reflected, I don’t know why. It’s still in my mailbox though. Thanks for those :D

I don’t delete any comments either and I love comments on my blog! I think leaving comments is also a courtesy way of telling people that you are reading their blogs. i sometimes wonder why people don’t comment on my blog but want to comment to me through other means instead! It’s my first time to your blog! Thanks for your frank opinion.
