Happy Easter!
By Grace on Mar 23, 2008 in personal thoughts
In some parts of the world, there is an Easter mass/service going on, an Easter egg hunt or even a party. So what’s in store for me today, Easter Sunday?
Nothing special.
I will be working just like the usual days (Sunday is work day in the UAE). Actually, it does feel like the usual days. Is this bad? Oh, I hope not.
When I was living in my parent’s house some years back, we would wake up at 4 am, sip a cup of hot chocolate and drag our still half-asleep selves to church with hundreds of other people to see the Resurrection re-enactment. I don’t know if it was worth it, hearing the mass with an empty stomach, our hearts wishing we were back in bed, facing the risk of a possible stampede with the huge crowd, but at least it made our mother happy and thank God no stampede happened. My mother wanted to keep that tradition every year but my father contradicts. He said it’s risky for kidsĀ (I agree with him!) and only produced a lot of unwanted pregnancies in our little town: young couples convenientlyhiding in the dark bushes at dawn. Ok, I will not elaborate.
Anyway, we did not go to church to see any resurrection stage play today. The one and only Catholic church is far from where we live and as I said, it’s work day today.
To all of you celebrating Easter, Happy Easter!

isn’t it sad that our kids are missing out on this tradition?

Happy Easter!
When I was still a little girl, my grandmother dragged me to every Easter Sunday dawn mass. I secretly hoped I’d be one of those girls (wearing “angel” costumes) who throw flowers. But I think my mother never allowed it…

So Sunday is a work day out there, eh? Do you have a weekend-like break or is it a work-day every day, just shorter than 8 or 9 hours?
Hope you had a great Easter anyway! (and hopefully you’ll be able to start some traditions with your family that don’t involve waking up at 4 am!!)

Hi Tammi,
I work Saturdays-Wednesday until 6pm and Thursdays 8:30-13:30. Only have Fridays off.
UAE has revised the work schedule for the private sector with Friday-Saturday weekend but my company insisted on their old system.

Easter produced unwanted pregnancies? I’m not sure that I follow - what kind of Easter celebration are you talking about?

Hi Stefanie,
Sorry, I was not talking about an Easter tradition that always relates to unwanted pregnancies.
To elaborate, in my home town, many youngesters would tell their parentts they’d attend Easter dawn mass, usually starting at 4 am but instead of going to church, they end up somewhere else and do SOMETHING ELSE. My father always said it’s because it’s still dark and attending Easter dawn mass was a perfect excuse. Of course, my father could be wrong! but that comment just stuck to my mind.
