spirit in the wind
Posted in personal thoughts on 04/12/2007 12:30 pm by GraceA little break from all the negative happenings lately….
The butterfly is a powerful symbol in myth and religion. For early Christians and most particularly to my mother, it represents the soul itself.

A butterfly resting at a tree in the backyard of my parent’s house
Back in my parent’s house, when we talk about close relatives who has passed away, there’s always a butterfly fluttering around, greeting us. It must be them, we thought — or we must be living in a butterfly heavy-populated area!
and it flew to my mother and decided to kiss her hands!
As a student in Japan many years ago, I would “talk” to butterflies if I find one — mostly, naturally! in the school garden or even in my dormitory room! I would address it as my grandmother who came to visit me and check on me. I was not able to go back and see her one last time when she passed away.
So, I don’t know who this playful spirit is but it surely kept my two-year old nephew entertained!
AJ looks half-frightened as well as half-amused!
I don’t know if I can find a butterfly in this part of the world, seems like a far-fetched imagination since butterflies often thrive everywhere but in a desert. Though there are lot of greens here, artificially made and all, I still don’t think I’ll see one, not unless some friendly spirit comes and checks on me again!

Wonderful post. This made me think of the hummingbird that built her nest in our carport not long after my mom passed away. She would always hover in front of the kitchen window and watch us. I always felt like it was the spirit of my mom, and every time I see a hummingbird, it makes me think of her!

who took the pictures grace? artistic kaayo- and nice camera too!.. Right, we have that thinking in our Filipino culture. I don’t know if it is limited to our culture- but once, I also believed that butterflies are spirits of dead persons who come to visit… But now, I think they are wonderful creatures who may not be messengers but could bring relaxation to people who will take the time to appreciate them.

As per my sister’s request (above, in our native tongue) I have to tell the world that she took the artistic butterfly pics, there.
