in which I find my camera sweaty

by Grace on July 20, 2009

Thanks to all who greeted on the anniversary thing. It was so rewarding to have spent it the non-traditional way (for us anyway) and we hope to do that again next year, hopefully. By the way, the traditional way was NOT celebrating at all. LOL!

Anyway, I brought my camera in the hope of taking photos in and around the hotel. It’s a great location, the Burj Dubai nearby, the Dubai mall, scenic Old Town community in Dubai and of course the Burj Dubai lake where the huge fountain is. What happened was, with very, very high humidity, I expected and felt it at around 1,234% percent (kidding but no kidding there), my poor camera lens fogged out the minute we stepped out of our comfort (airconditioned) zone and onto the open air. The real world was so different.

Not only the air was heavy with humidity, it was also still so hot even at 7 pm. We walked a short distance to the nearby Dubai Mall to see the fountain and Pristine was soaked in sweat. I was too, but it’s easier to imagine her soaking in sweat and still cute than if I described how I looked after that short walk! I forgot to tie my long hair so that was enough to make me feel like hell’s burning at the back of my neck.

It was a pretty normal summer weather on Thursday afternoon. No sandstorm but when I went out? My camera lens immediately fogged and thus this picture:

fogged

When we entered another building, the temperature difference was at least 20C degrees. Outside it could be 40C and inside, it was definitely 20C or less than it – really not good for health, mine and my camera’s.

The Burj Dubai in my fogged lens:

Amazingly, this is not because of my fogged lens – there was a sandstorm on Friday afternoon while we were napping and shutting out the curtains. When I opened the curtain and looked out, this is what I saw:

fog-afternoon

The afternoon sun was blocked out by heavy dust and fog. (I took this photo inside our room with my lens unfogged. ) If there’s one thing good about sand/dust storms, the blanket of haze provides as a block from the sun’s rays and the temperature drops down.

So back to my problem…I really miss taking photos outside but I can’t risk making my camera lens sweat and develop molds or whatever unpleasant results!

Any ideas what to do to prevent lens fogging and/or ways to take photos during highly humid summer?

Oh my gosh. I kinda like the haze effect! I’d just use this time to take haze and fog shots.

I know, I know. The temp fluctuations aren’t good for the camera.
But if it breaks, you can get a new one, because you live in Dubai :)

“hell’s burnin at the back of my neck”…. I love it! It sounds sort of poetic.

If only it wasn’t so hot and the probability that my camera will be damaged, taking fog shots would be fun…

Oh no, I’ve saved for that camera all my life (ok, a little exagerration there) but no, we couldn’t afford to buy again if it breaks!

Oh wow!
Those are amazing, especially the last one with the sand storm…I don’t think I have ever seen one!
It’s very lovely(but then again, I’m not the one stuck in it Lol)
Unfortunately, I’m not sure about the fogged lens, but If I come across anything I’ll let you know!

Sandstorms isn’t fun when you’re in the middle of it. That day, my mom who was outside said it was windy and the wind picks up sand and dust. You’ll be surprised to find sand in the rims of your bra! (not that I was walking around Dubai with only my bra) LOL!

I think, but am not possitive, that if you keep the camera warmer than the room temperature, by wraping it in such things as towels and blankets, it will not react as much to the temperature change when you go outside. We used to do that when we traveled to the Carribbean on cruise ship and the cabin was so cold but outside was so warm. But with such a drop in change, I am not sure if it would work. You are correct that the condensation is not good for the inner workings of your camera, so I would try to keep it wrapped up anyway if you are going to be taking it in and out on a regular basis.
Thanks for the pictures anyway, they are very interesting… I had heard about the sandstorm on the news, believe it or not. Since I have been following your blog, I have been listening to any news I can glean about Dubai from anywhere. :-) I am glad that you are all safe and sound. Have a great week.

When it fogs, point the camera at the sun, it will help it unfog quickly. (I learned that from a photographer onboard)
