Sandier Pastures

Today Pristine starts another school. We finally found a school that I feel we will be happy about. The company I am working for right now is running an International School based on the English National curriculum and is located very near where we live. We toured the school last week and found out that there are limited number of students per class, allowing more individual attention, the kids are happy and the school is well equipped with UK qualified teachers. The school was built last year so the building is new and the surroundings are clean. Little P instantly fell in love with the Kindergarten classroom.

Now, schools following the English curriculum usually commence on September. But since we weren’t able to find a suitable nursery for her and couldn’t keep her idle inside the house until September, I begged asked if they could let her start for the Summer term in April. The teacher said she will ‘run’ some kind of assessment and see if Pristine will be ok inside the class with other kids a year older than she is.

We took her for the assessment last Sunday and after an hour or so, she came out of the classroom  hand in hand with the teacher, beaming and told me in whispers: “I love it here, Mom”.

The KG1 teacher talked to the principal convincing her that Pristine will do fine in the class and could start as early as we want! I am so thrilled. Finally, our daughter will be going to a proper school. There are lots of Japanese kids there too, if I may mention…which means something: the school must be good because Jap families are so keen on selecting good school for their children outside Japan — they always compare it to the quality of education in Japan. I know because I do too.

So, it’s a big day today. Hubby woke up at 5 am to prepare breakfast and Pristine’s packed lunch/snacks. I was still curling in bed cheek to cheek with our little new student until breakfast was ready! I will post a picture of Pristine’s lunch box courtesy of her father sometime soon.

The school van arrived at 7:15 a.m. I told the assistant that Pristine might be crying all the way to school…but she was not! There were 11 children inside the bus and all Japanese! Maybe my daughter certainly felt at home at the sound of Nihongo babbling around her. I was stunned I forgot to kiss her goodbye. As the van rolled away, she peeked and bade me goodbye, smiling.

For a first-day-at-school-episode, it was just perfect.
