Hand carry essentials

At the time this post goes live, we’re not on the ground.

1. Passports - Mine and those travelling with me. Whenever we travel, one person has to hold all the passports to save time.

2. E-tickets and boarding passes - Another important piece of document that should not be missed. 33.33% of the trip depends on this! (the other 33.33% is the passport)

3. Wallet - the remaining 33.33%

4. Pen - to use when writing embarkation/disembarkation cards or simply to use with a paper to entertain the kiddo on board.

5. Organizer - with the trip itinerary planned out and written there.

6. Lip cream and hand lotion - cabin pressure and aircon dries my lips and skin.

7. Handkerchief - it will come handy with the babe around.

8. Pocket tissues - There’s nothing like going to the toilet to find out there are no tissues available.

9. House/car keys - Since I can’t leave them inside when I go out and lock the door behind me.

10. Eyeglasses - so I can recognize the people meeting me at the airport and of course the correct boarding gates!

11. Headache tablet - I never go out without Panadol.

12. Hand sanitizer - to lessen the chance of catching the stomach bug while travelling and on vacation.

13. Comb - Gotta fix the unruly hair ruffled by hours of contact with the plane seat to look presentable upon landing!

Anything else I should be putting in my small handbag?

Just got back from vacation and wish we would have thought of one person holding our passports, I couldn’t find mine at the border so we had to rummage through the entire car to go through. It wasted a good 30 minutes, next time though we will be more prepared.

I can’t believe how many people don’t travel with a pen in their bag. I have to carry extras for people to use when filling out declaration forms.

I’ve learned to be a bit of a paranoid traveler. Whatever could go wrong has gone wrong. In DC they lost my luggage. Thankfully I had packed one set of extra clothes and my toiletries in my backpack so at least I’d have my clothes for work the next day. In Cleveland our plane was late due to technical difficulties and this was on the way back from a long weekend trip to a show. We were stranded with no toiletries and no clothes. The airline was kind enough to give us a mini pack of what resembled full size toiletries and get us rooms at the hotel on campus. This was when I learned to carry at least an extra pair of undies and maybe a clean T-shirt so I’d have something to sleep in. After this on a trip to New Orleans I had my backpack crammed full on the way home. Unfortunately, my ticket was the only one in the group that was flagged for searching at EVERY checkpoint. It was a little embarrassing to have my bras and undies displayed to my coworkers, but at least I would be prepared if we had another unscheduled pit stop. Now, I can’t go as crazy because of the new regulations on carrying liquids (aka, toothpaste, deodorant, hairspray, shampoo, conditioner, etc.) but I still carry that extra pair of undies, socks, toothbrush, comb and hair clip just in case.

I’d suggest one more thing when you travel. Always when I arrive in a new town I want to stay in for a while I immediately buy the town map. I’m never lost and I don’t have to ask for way.
