1. 1497 Portuguese explorer Vasco de Gama became the first navigator to sail around the Cape of Good Hope in his search for a sea route to India.
2. 1718 Edward Teach known as Blackbeard the Pirate was killed on North Carolina shore.
3. 1842 Mount St. Helens in Washington erupts. Ash fallout reached as far as 48 miles away.
4. 1890 French world war II resistance leader and President Charles de Gaulle was born.
5. 1906 International Radio Telecommunications Com in Berlin adopts “SOS” as new call for help.
6. 1943 President Franklin D. Roosevelt, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and Chinese Leader Chiang Kai-shek meet in Cairo to discuss ways to defeat Japan.
7. 1963 The Beatles release their 2nd album “With the Beatles” in the UK.
8. 1963 John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Texas.
9. 1967 Tennis player Boris Becker was born.
10. 1977 Regular passenger service between New York and Europe in the supersonic Concorde began on a trial basis.
11. 1990 Margaret Thatcher announced her resignation as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
12. 2005 Angela Merkel took power as Germany’s first female chancellor.
13. 2007 Owner of this blog gains another candle on her already candle-filled, cramped birthday cake.
