THIRTEEN THINGS I WANT THE PEOPLE OF DUBAI TO DO

  • Drive carefully! The life you’ll be saving might be your very own. What happened to your defensive driving course learned at driving school?
  • Minimize honking your horn every minute. The traffic flow will not be faster even if you honk to your heart’s content!
  • Park your cars properly. Aren’t you ashamed to see there are 20 parking spaces with only 10 cars in it? Align your mirror, stick out your head if needed. Park your sophisticated cars in the right way - within the lines and borders of ONE parking space! What’s the use of your nice and expensive car if you are stupid?
  • Stop throwing garbage mindlessly. If there are no garbage bins around, take your trash home!
  • Regulate the aircon at common sense level. 15C is TOO cold. If you are dreaming of real cold, go somewhere else and do not try to pretend you are experiencing early winter inside the office!
  • Female single expats at the expatwoman forums, stop asking if you’re getting enough. The numbers in your salary contract are more than enough - if you would just cut out dining every chance possible in every 5 star hotel and the manicures and pedicures on weekly basis.
  • Please treat your maids as another human being. They talk and moan endlessly at the park where they take your kids there. The stories they tell about some of you are not nice.
  • Dress properly. I know it’s hot and all but it’s freezing inside the malls. Don’t go walking inside the mall premises with only your bikini top and some sarong - this is still a muslim country!
  • Taxi drivers, please be familiar with the roads before you sit for work in the morning. Also, a handful of bills and coins for change would be helpful.
  • Families should get together and do something about the school fee hike every year! One school I know charges AED60,000 for Year 1. That’s roughly US$17,000 for one year, for Year 1!
  • Stop paying people their salaries according to their nationality.
  • Stop putting “Western educated only” in your classified ads.
  • Stop giving words of admiration to my child “Oh what a darling. How cute!” and ask me “Is this your kid?” or the horrific: “Are you the caretaker?”

About the maids treated as human beings (and not like they’re lesser beings), that should be done everywhere around the globe.

“You know how hard i carried her for nine months then i have my one foot buried on the ground while giving birth, then you will ask if i am the caretaker of this cute kid? Am i not cute as her?”

    Am i OA?

My in-laws worked in the Caribbean for 7 years, and a lot of the the things you listed (if not all) were the same. They were often shocked by how the people from what were considered “lesser” islands were treated…which was very poorly.
